Yet, at other times when a mule fell wounded or exhausted, Antonio Marino observed a “surreal example of human solidarity” as mule handlers hitched themselves to sleds, taking the place of the animals, while others pushed the sleds from behind, determined not to abandon their wounded comrades who begged them not to leave them on the steppe.93

After marching for more than forty kilometers in the deep snow, the withdrawing forces reached the villages surrounding Uspenka, where they stopped for the night. The following day, January 28, after five hours of sleep in abandoned izbas, the men scavenged for anything edible: sunflower seeds, turnips, even frozen garbage. The march resumed. “Fatigue, hunger, thirst, and intense cold, lack of sleep: these five elements existed in various ways in the body of every man, and already the first few kilometers of walking demanded desperate tenacity to proceed….”94
